Alberta Graduate Entrepreneur Stream

September 09, 2025 by Hayley Thiessen

Alberta Graduate Entrepreneur Stream

The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) continues to offer opportunities for international graduates who studied in Alberta and are ready to transition into entrepreneurship. One key pathway is the Graduate Entrepreneur Stream, which allows eligible graduates to establish or operate a business in Alberta and eventually apply for permanent residence.

Eligibility Highlights

  • Must have completed at least two years of full-time education at an approved Alberta post-secondary institution
  • Must hold a valid Post-Graduation Work Permit at the time of application
  • Must have a minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level of 7 in English or French
  • Must establish a new business or purchase an existing business in Alberta, with at least 34% ownership if located in an urban centre or 51% if located outside Calgary or Edmonton
  • Must develop and submit a detailed business plan demonstrating job creation and economic benefit

Why Does Alberta Have This Stream?

Alberta continues to face challenges in diversifying its economy and supporting small business growth, particularly outside the major cities. The Graduate Entrepreneur Stream encourages international graduates, who already understand Alberta’s labour market and culture, to remain in the province and contribute directly to its economic vitality.

Some businesses are considered ineligible, such as payday loan, cannabis retail, and home-based businesses without employees.

Why Is This Important for International Graduates in Alberta?

This stream gives Alberta graduates a direct path from study, to work, to permanent residence through entrepreneurship. Many international students come to Canada hoping to not only study but also build a long-term future. The Graduate Entrepreneur Stream bridges this by rewarding innovation, risk-taking, and commitment to the province.
