Express Entry Breaking Records For Permanent Residency

July 09, 2021 by Carly Perryman, Marvin Geekie

Canada has seen an unprecedented year for immigration so far. As of June 30, 2021, our country has invited 88,175 candidates to apply for permanent residence through the Express Entry economic immigration system. During the first quarter of the year (January to March) 44,124 immigration candidates were invited then during the second quarter (April to June), Canada issued a further 44,591 invitations. These numbers are the highest ever, surpassing the previous record set in 2017.

We are seeing lower overall scores and more rounds of invitations.

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is an online system through which Immigration, Refugee & Citizenship Canada (IRCC) manages candidates for Canada’s three economic classes of immigration:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • Canadian Experience Class
  • Candidates are given a score out of 1,200. The score is based on various criteria such as age, occupation, family status, job offer in Canada, work experience and education, to name a few.

There are draws from the pool through the year, which we monitor closely and provide ongoing evaluation and advice regarding your submission to increase your chances of selection.

The highest-scoring candidates receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence through the online Express Entry system. Once an application is submitted, IRCC will review and process the application and make a final decision.

    Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)

Each Province has a Provincial Nominee Program. Each Province’s economic growth depends on having enough skilled and qualified people to meet labour market needs. The PNP is a way for high-demand foreign works and experienced entrepreneurs to gain permanent residency in a particular province in Canada.

Each province has different pathways through which candidates can apply, including skilled workers, International Graduates, entrepreneurs and French-speaking skilled workers. Each province also has PNP pathways that link to the Federal Express Entry system. Success with the PNP Program will give the applicant 600 additional points towards their Express Entry score.

    2021 Immigration Targets

Canada is targeting to welcome 401,000 new immigrants this year. Of those, 108,500 will be through Express Entry immigration programs. 80,800 will come through a provincial nominee program.
