Parents' Sponsorship Programs Open October 13

October 06, 2020 by Carly Perryman

Now, more than ever, family reunification is an important part of the Canadian immigration system.

The Canadian Government will accept interest to sponsor forms for the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) between 12 pm EDT on October 13, 2020 and 12 pm EDT on November 3, 2020. These are not the applications for the sponsorship itself, but rather, are an opportunity to be placed in a pool to be selected to apply in the future.

Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will then, at a yet to be announced date, randomly select potential sponsors and send them an invitation to complete and submit their application. Selected applicants will have up to 60 days to complete and submit their online application.

On October 13, 2020, the online system will accept 30,000 expressions on interest and from those, only 10,000 will be selected in 2020. This is less than 2019, where 20,000 spots were available. In 2021, IRCC is projecting they will invite a further 30,000.

In addition, IRCC also introduced a new temporary policy that will lower the income requirement to account for anyone who has been negatively affected by COVID-19.
