Lawyer Spotlight On David Horvath

February 14, 2020 by David Horvath

Originally from Hungary’s mining town of Komló, David Horvath immigrated to Canada with his family in 1999. He is the first member of his family to attend a post-secondary institution, graduating from the University of British Columbia with a double major in history and classical studies. David then continued to complete law school at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, B.C., taking a special interest in tortious liability claims.

David completed his articles at a criminal law firm in Vancouver, where he appeared frequently before the Courts. After being called to the bar in 2018, David brought his court room experience to FH&P Lawyers LLP focusing on general civil litigation. Going to law school in Kamloops, David developed a love for British Columbia’s interior and always planned on moving back, however, an opportunity to work with FH&P’s experienced litigation team came sooner than he anticipated. FH&P offered David the mentorship young lawyers need to excel in the legal profession and a firm culture that can be best described as a team approach to practicing law.

In just two years at FH&P, David has been involved in multiple trials before the Supreme Court of British Columbia that have garnered media attention. David is proud that in less than 2 years of practicing law, he has five written decision that bear his name, with many more to come. The mentorship FH&P offers young litigators and a team centered approach to practicing law, helped David find success appearing before multiple levels of Court. FH&P’s senior lawyers take mentorship roles at the firm that produce high quality lawyers that help British Columbia’s interior thrive.

When David is not in the office, he can be found hiking, kayaking, enjoying the Okanagan’s many wineries and craft breweries, or cooking decadent dishes using local ingredients. David’s favorite destinations to visit thus far include Hungary, particularly for the food, and Belgium. In the future, David plans to visit every province and territory in Canada to experience the unique sights Canada has to offer, coast to coast.

When you ask David why he became a lawyer, he will say that this is a difficult question to answer. His childhood was not a typical one, he endured many obstacles and personal challenges, which he is apprehensive to discuss, but what he took from those experiences was a profound appreciation for how words can change lives for the better. This is the reason David became a lawyer, to better his clients’ lives using the written and spoken word. As the saying goes, “the pen is mightier than the sword.”

The way David practices law is unique because it stays true to his roots, taking a direct approach when advising clients engaged in complex litigation, without “beating around the bush”. While he is well-versed in the law and the procedural issues involved in litigation, he makes a point of not overwhelming clients with jargon. Rather, he gives direct and practical advice that allows clients to make the most informed decision advancing their claim, identifying the risks and the possible rewards.

David is fluent in both Hungarian and English, he practices general civil litigation, estate litigation, commercial litigation, personal injury and family law. English may be David’s second language, but you would never know it from speaking with him.
