Economic Immigration

Do I need a job offer?

A job offer can boost your CRS score or be required for PNP streams and pilot programs.

Can my family come with me to Canada?

Yes. You can include your spouse or common law partner and dependent children in your PR application.  There are also some provisions for TRVs for spouses and children of dependent workers.

Can I move anywhere in Canada after getting PR?

Yes - unless you are nominated through a Provincial Nominee Program or Pilot Program in which case you are expected to live in that province or community for a reasonable period.

Permanent Residency Renewal & Citizenship

When should I renew my PR card?

2 to 6 months before expiry of your current PR card.

Can I travel outside of Canada without a valid PR card?

You will not be allowed to reenter Canada by airplane, ferry, bus or another public method without a valid PR card.  If you are already outside Canada with an expired PR card, you can apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) to reenter Canada.

Are there exceptions to the residency requirements to renew my PR card?

Yes, even if outside Canada, some periods can count towards your
730 days such as accompanying a Canadian citizen spouse or common law partner, employment outside Canada for a Canadian business and humanitarian and compassionate considerations.

Spousal Sponsorships & Family Reunification

Can the foreign spouse work while waiting for PR?

The foreign spouse may be eligible to work while the sponsorship application is processing if their application is from inside Canada (inland).

Does the sponsor need a job or income to be a sponsor?

There is no minimum income requirement to sponsor your non Canadian spouse.  However, they must show the ability to support the spouse without the need for social assistance.

Refused Applications | Deportation | Appeals | Restoration of Status

Can I reapply after my immigration application is refused?

If your situation has changed or you can fix the problems, you can submit a new application in most cases.

If you are found inadmissible, you should not reapply and it would be wise to consult an immigration professional.

What do I do if CBSA is investigating me?

Do not ignore letters, calls or requests to appear by CBSA as failure to respond can result in arrest or removal.  Contact a lawyer right away.  It is important to know your legal rights and the processes involved.

Inadmissibility & Rehabilitation

What do I do if I am found inadmissible by IRCC?

If you have been found inadmissible, it is serious - but it is not always the end of the road.  What you do depends on the reason why you have been found inadmissible which can range from appeal, application for Judicial Review, applying for a Temporary Resident Permit or other options.
