Denied Insurance Claim? You May Have More Options Than You Think

October 26, 2026 by Darren Kautz

FH&P litigator Darren Kautz says a denial letter does not necessarily mean the process is over.

A denial letter rarely arrives at a good time. You might be home recovering from an emergency abroad, grieving while you wait on a life insurance payout, or counting on disability benefits because you can no longer work. It can feel final. But it often isn’t.

Darren Kautz, a Kelowna litigator and partner who handles insurance disputes at our firm, says travel, life, health and disability claims are denied more often than most people expect, and many can be challenged. Insurers, he says, “bank on a majority of people not wanting to dispute the denial.”

We have seen this firsthand. One client was airlifted out of the country after a medical emergency, then told the travel insurer would not cover the flight. With our help, the client challenged the decision, and the insurer reinstated coverage.

In his Okanagan Edge feature, Darren explains:

  • Why travel denials so often come back to medical history

  • How an answer on an old life insurance application can stall a claim years later

  • What to do first if your claim is denied, and what to hold off on
