Express Entry Permanent Residency Fully Re-Opens

July 13, 2022 by Carly Perryman

Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced that Express Entry draws for all permanent residency programs have resumed after being on hold for more than 18 months.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, IRCC paused many immigration programs when border closures and other restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic caused a backlog in the number of applications for permanent residence in Canada.

The only portion of the Express Entry program that has remained open is the Provincial Nominee Program candidates stream to apply for permanent residence in Canada. The last draw was on June 22, 2022 with a minimum invitation score of 752 out of 1,200.

Candidates from an Express Entry Provincial Nominee program category automatically get 600 points added to their overall Comprehensive Ranking Score (CRS), which is why the required score is so high for this round of invitations.

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is an online system through which Immigration, Refugee & Citizenship Canada (IRCC) manages candidates for Canada’s three economic classes of immigration:

• Federal Skilled Worker Program

• Federal Skilled Trades Program

• Canadian Experience Class

Candidates are given a score out of 1,200. The score is based on various criteria such as age, occupation, family status, job offer in Canada, work experience, and education, to name a few.

There are draws from the pool through the year, which we monitor closely and provide ongoing evaluation and advice regarding your submission to increase your chances of selection.

The highest-scoring candidates receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence through the online Express Entry system. Once an application is submitted, IRCC will review and process the application and make a final decision.

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)

Each Province has a Provincial Nominee Program. Each Province’s economic growth depends on having enough skilled and qualified people to meet labour market needs. The PNP is a way for high-demand foreign workers and experienced entrepreneurs to gain permanent residency in a particular province in Canada.

Each province has different pathways in which candidates can apply, including skilled workers, International Graduates, entrepreneurs and French-speaking skilled workers. Each province also has PNP pathways that link to the Federal Express Entry system.

Immigration Targets

According to the Immigration Levels Plan from 2022-2024, Canada will welcome over 110,000 new Express Entry immigrants and grant them status as permanent residents by 2024. These targets have been increased recently to account for the critical labour market shortages in Canada.
