FH&P Lawyers are excited to welcome two articling students to the firm this summer, both from Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops.
Rene Watson, of Kelowna, just finished her first year of law school at TRU, while Jaewon Shin, of Toronto, is now entering his third year at TRU but also getting his first articling experience with FH&P.
“I do like justice for people. Helping somebody through their toughest times and their best times, that is what motivated me to go to law school,” said Watson.
As for what brought Shin west to British Columbia, he said “I just wanted a change. I wanted to practice out here, and they tell you to go to school in the province you want to practice in, so I decided to apply to the B.C. schools.”
He has been enjoying B.C. in general and his first few weeks in Kelowna with FH&P.
“So far, so good, they are keeping me busy working on a lot of different areas, which is nice,” said Shin, who has spent time with Audra Bayer in family law and is now alongside Brett McClelland and Kevin Cheung, who have been introducing him to construction litigation and personal injury. “It has been interesting. I’ve been enjoying it so far. I definitely want to do litigation. I don’t have any particular area of interest, as of yet.”
Watson is also looking forward to getting her feet wet on the litigation side.
“I’m still starting out, so I haven’t really had an opportunity to try any litigation, that is something I’d like to explore this summer,” she said, noting she is mentoring under Nancy Ling, working alongside Tanvir Gill and Jen Schreurs. “My dad is in real estate, so real estate and property law are super interesting to me. My office partner does wills and estates, and that seems to be quite interesting too.”
Shin and Watson are on course to be called to the BC Bar in 2025 and 2026, respectively.
FH&P has had a great track record with the students that article at the firm. Partners Heidi Taylor (2003) and Dylan Switzer (2007), along with Associate Colin Flannigan (2013) articled and then were hired by the firm, as were former Associates Andrea Meyes (2019) and Clarissa Lester (2022).
